Andy Moran ‘ready to go’ if needed for cameo against Galway

The Mayo forward could yet play some part in Mayo’s championship opener this month.

MAYO SKIPPER Andy Moran says he may well play some part against Galway in the Connacht championship clash later this month.

The former All Star hasn’t played since tearing his cruciate against Down at Croke Park in the All-Ireland quarter final last year.

But with a meeting against provincial rivals Galway slated for 19 May, Moran says he hopes to feature at some stage.

“To be honest what I’m doing is just taking it one session at a time,” the Ballaghaderreen man told reporters at the launch of the Connacht championship in Mayo yesterday.

“I’m trying to put as much pressure as I can, but to be ready and to be 70 minutes ready is a different story. I haven’t been involved in any match, even an A versus B match in training for the last nine months. I’m back at that level now though and it’s time to go and take the shackles off. How ready I’m going to be on Sunday week though, I couldn’t honestly tell you.

“At the minute am I thinking about my knee? I am, because I trained last night and it’s tired today. That’s just the way it’s going to be, it’s like any other normal injury.”

But though he’s not back to full-fitness, Moran reckons he can do a job if required if and when the call comes.

“I think that’s the big thing about not missing any training sessions,” he said. “I’ve been there and I see the way we try to play and what we’re trying to do. So in terms of that (coming in with 10 minutes to go), yeah, I’m ready to go.”

Salthill is looking a little over grown there. Great player for Mayo, hope he comes back strong.
