Andrzej Jezierski takes "B" honours, finishes 9th

The Polish national won the “B” final of the men’s canoe single (C1) 200m in Eton Dorney this morning.

IRISH PADDLER ANDRZEJ JEZIERSKI won his canoe sprint “B” final, bowing out of London 2012 on a high note.

Jezierski narrowly missed out on a place in the medal final of the men’s canoe single (C1) 200m but showed himself to be the best of the rest in Eton Dorney on Saturday.

The Polish national, now a member of Lee Valley Rowing Club in Cork, won in 44.041 seconds ahead of Vadim Menkov (44.168) and Attila Vajda (44.466) to finish in ninth place overall.

In the “A” final, gold went to Ukraine’s Yuri Cheban in 42.291 seconds. Jevgenij Shuklin of Lithuania took silver in 42.792 seconds while Russian Ivan Shtyl’ finished third for bronze in 42.853.

A double world champion when competing under the Polish flag, Jezierski was tipped as one of Ireland’s outside medal hopes in London.

The 32-year-old may wonder what might have been had he not been drawn in the fastest of the three semi-finals on Friday.

After coming second in his preliminary heat, Jezierski only managed to finish fourth behind Shtyl’ and Alfonso Benavidez Lopes de Ayala who took the two automatic qualification slots.

The athletes all appeared to struggle with the tight turnaround between semi-finals and finals though, and Jezierski’s semi-final time of 42.014 was more than two-tenths of a second faster than Cheban’s gold-medal winning time.

No Dublin event – for now – to welcome Ireland’s Olympians home
