ANDRÉ SCHÜRRLE HAS become the latest German player to be ruled out of tonight’s Euro 2016 qualifier against Ireland.

It’s been confirmed that Schürrle ‘has caught a cold’ and the Chelsea attacker will sit out the game in Gelsenkirchen.

The unavailability of Schürrle adds to a German list of absentees that already includes the injured quartet of Bastian Schweinsteiger, Sami Khedira, Mesut Ozil and Marco Reus.

In addition Germany have lost Philipp Lahm, Per Mertesacker and Miroslav Klose to retirement since their World Cup final win over Argentina in July.

So can we start getting optimistic now of Martin O’Neill’s side springing a surprise or are clutching at straws?

5 talking points ahead of today’s Germany-Ireland clash

No room for error: Ireland must be ‘really focused, really strong’, says O’Neill
