Reports: Manchester United set to sign Spanish midfielder Ander Herrera

After failing to land the Athletic Bilbao midfielder last summer, the club are close to finalising a deal this time.

ACCORDING TO WIDESPREAD REPORTS, Manchester United are expected to complete the signing of Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera sooner rather than later.

On Monday night, Spanish media claimed the Premier League side had already tabled a bid and that discussions were expected to take place in the coming days.

United made a belated and bungled attempt to sign the 24 year-old last summer – a process that ended in farce and failure. Three Spanish lawyers turned up at the offices of the Spanish league apparently representing the club, though United later distanced themselves from the individuals and referred to them as ‘imposters’.

Still, as United’s season faltered, rumours circulated that Herrera was still on their radar with speculation suggesting a January transfer-window move. But that never materialised and it seemed interest in the player had relaxed somewhat.

But, last week, reports indicated United’s new manager Louis van Gaal is a fan of Herrera’s and asked for a bid to be submitted.

Like last year, United don’t have much time to orchestrate a decent deal. Herrera has a buy-out clause in his current contract that increases to €42m on 1st July.

United are hopeful that a bid of 36m will secure his services.
