IRELAND’S ANNALISE MURPHY was this afternoon confirmed as the 2013 Laser Radial European champion.
The 23-year-old’s finishes of second, third and first in today’s final three races on Dublin Bay ensured she won the regatta in impressive fashion.
Murphy ultimately triumphed by a considerable margin of 17 points, ahead of Marit Bouwmeester of Holland and Britain’s Alison Young.
It completed a phenomenal run of eight wins out of ten starts overall for the Irish sailor.
Meanwhile, 17-year-old Finn Lynch from Carlow took the 2013 U21 Men’s Laser Radial title.
He also secured bronze in the overall World Championship and silver in the European Championship.
Well done Annalise, lets hope the boys in green follow this up with a victory tonight to make it a perfect day for Irish sport.
Congrats, onwards and upwards.
Congrats Annalise, bring on Rio 2016!!
Great stuff from the girl who went so close to a medal in London. Onwards & upwards now towards Rio 2016.
I have been following Annalise’s progress. Am delighted for her!
It’s good to see these results. As an island nation, Ireland should really be excelling in all things navigation. Not only should we have a larger and more important navy than we currently do, we should be competing in, and winning, a lot more major sailing competitions.
We should be at the level that a similar-sized island nation, such as New Zealand, are at. New Zealanders are wonderful sailors and have truly embraced their status as an island nation and have made the best of it. We in Ireland should be at that level and should really be seeking to emulate New Zealand; it would benefit our country greatly.
don’t agree with your pint about us having a larger navy or about trying to emulate the New Zealanders, in anything, except rugby!
I would love to see them hurl all the same!
Comparing Ireland to Nz is chalk to cheese in sports. Ireland’s sporting and national identity revolves around the GAA, as the English tried to kill off our culture we rallied around it and made the it’s importance unique in comparison to any other sport. Gaa wouldn’t be half as strong as it is today if it was tolerated by the Brits.
Good man Finn Lynch, mup Carlow
