American dream: Lynam takes a year out to travel

Westmeath forward Conor Lynam has informed management that he will not be available for the 2012 league and championship.

WESTMEATH’S SENIOR FOOTBALLERS have been dealt a blow by the news that forward Conor Lynam will not be joining them for the 2012 season.

The talented 21-year-old has informed manager Pat Flanagan that he plans to move to America for an extended break once he finishes his studies this May.

Lynam’s travel plans mean that he will not be available for selection when Westmeath begin their Leinster Championship campaign against Louth on 20 May.

The youngster is currently recovering from a broken leg, and although he is likely to be fit in time for the Allianz National Football League, Lynam has decided not to challenge for a place in the Westmeath squad.

“I could play in the league for Westmeath,” Lynam told GAA.ie, “but my attitude is: ‘if you’re not going to play in the championship, you shouldn’t be playing in the league.’”

Besides, it would be unfair to others if I was keeping them off the team when I wouldn’t be around for the championship.

Westmeath’s Division Two opener, which is also against Louth, takes place on 5 February in Drogheda.
