NOTHING QUITE MATCHES the drama of a late World Cup goal. Remember where you were when Big Niall Quinn flicked on the ball for Robbie against Germany 12 years ago?
American football fans are no stranger to last-gasp heroics — remember this? — but the country lost its mind again last night as John Anthony Brooks (to give him his full title) popped up in the 86th minute to snatch a 2-1 win against Ghana.
Brooks’s reaction was priceless:
He was immediately hailed as “the greatest American since Abraham Lincoln” through some clever Wiki vandalism:
All across America, the celebrations mirrored Brooks’s:

Here’s how the Twitter map looked as the goal went in:

There are lots of other examples like this, and this, and this.
One of the highlights was this news report from local Portland station KGW who cut to reporter Drew Carney in a beer garden moments before Brooks’s goal:
Carney’s celebration was almost as good as Brooks’s!
All in all, it’s pretty safe to say that America enjoyed that one.
