10 of TheScore.ie’s alternative end-of-season Premier League awards

We look back on the most memorable moments in the top flight (and occasionally the Europa League and League Cup).

1. Goal of the season

Matthew Lowton for Aston Villa v Stoke City (a), April 6

Lowton, a 23-year-old English right-back, produced one of the moments of the season when he scored a blockbuster to tip a relegation tussle at the Britannia Stadium in his side’s favour. The score was 1-1 when, with only three minutes to play, Lowton controlled a high ball on his chest and sent a dipping volley past Stoke goalkeeper Asmir Begovic from 30 yards. His jubilant celebration was almost as momentous as the goal itself.

2. Game of the season

Manchester City 2 Manchester United 3

Robin van Persie sparked chaotic scenes as the United striker’s injury-time winner capped a heated Manchester derby at Eastlands and put his side six points clear of their bitter rivals.

United had raced into a two-goal lead as Wayne Rooney struck in the 16th and 29th minutes.

But Yaya Toure’s effort on the hour gave City a lifeline and the champions looked to have rescued a point when Pablo Zabaleta equalised with only four minutes to play.

There was a sting in the tale for City, though, as Van Persie’s free-kick curled past Joe Hart, prompting one City fan to invade the pitch in a bid to confront United defender Rio Ferdinand, who had been struck in the face by a coin while celebrating the winner.

Gary Neville, used to hate him with a passion but his analysis and knowledge of the game is second to none.

Wait till Jamie Carragher joins the team… Then we’ll see who’s second to none. Carra is a stat machine.

    You’re crazy!

Rvp caught his on the volley first time from a ball coming from over his shoulder. That is a much harder skill than flicking the ball up for yourself and hitting it. Lowtons goal was great, don’t get me wrong, but Rvp’s was out of this world.

He did exactly the same thing for Arsenal in the past. MOTD did a split screen of the two goals and RVPs technique was I identical. There’s no denying the lad’s talent but as far as an alternative goes Lowtons was pretty amazing.

Lowton’s as it pretty much kept Villa up, in the dying minutes of a 6-pointer, controlled on his chest and volleyed from nearly 30 yards, above hip-height, under pressure.
RVP – great technique, lovely goal, but already winning 1-0, against Villa!, league won, and very little pressure on him.
