Laois shock Offaly as 14-men Wexford hold on in Division 1B

A late fightback from the Faithful fell just short.

Laois 1-19

Offaly 2-14

LAOIS RECORDED THEIR first win over Offaly in Tullamore since 1960 after surviving a late fightback from the Faithful this afternoon.

Séamus Plunkett’s men were dominant throughout the opening period, limiting Offaly to just one point from play in the first half; going into the break 1-9 to 0-7, Stephen Maher raising the green flag with a 21m free.

They stretched that lead in the second half despite Maher missing a penalty and looked set to record a comfortable win until Daniel Currams and Dermot Mooney set up a nervous finish with goals for Offaly.

However, Laois held on to record a famous victory.

Wexford 0-15

Antrim 1-11

Elsewhere in Division 1B, Wexford played the entire second half with 14 men after Richie Kehoe was shown the line in the 34th minute but still had a point to spare over Antrim in Ballycastle.

Jack Guiney’s frees kept the scoreboard ticking over for Wexford in the second half but, just like in Tullamore, a late goal from the hosts set up a grandstand finish.

However, Daniel McKernan’s goal was to be in vain after Paul Shiels sent a late free wide for the Saffrons.

I live close to Rapid’s Alllianz stadium (28,000 capacity) and Rovers are probably in for a tough game. They are going well in the Austrian Bundesliga – second at the moment. Beat RB Salzburg a view weeks ago, beat their sworn enemies Austria Vienna in the derby, and drew with Sturm Graz the leaders the other night. Best of luck to Rovers.
