Offaly beat Meath in 9-goal thriller as the All-Ireland Minor Football and Hurling Championships kick into gear

Wins for Offaly, Waterford and Tipperary in the football were watched by victories for Kildare, Kilkenny and Offaly in the hurling.

Leinster Minor Football Championship first round

Offaly 6-10
Meath 3-8

There was no shortage of goals at Pairc Tailteann as Offaly earned a handsome win over Meath.

In a truly bizarre match the Faithful boys trailed by nine points at one stage as Meath were brilliant early on, but Offaly recovered.

Joey Wallace and Daire Rowe nabbed early goals for Meath, but a Patrick Duignan effort cut the half-time deficit to 2-6 to 1-3.

Offaly’s Adam Mangan and Meath’s James McEntee then traded goals before the Faithful finished with a flourish.

James Evans, Adam Shelly (2) and Alan Geoghegan were amongst the goalscorers as Offaly eventually prevailed at the end of an absorbing tussle.

Munster Minor Football Championship quarter finals

Waterford 3-10
Limerick 3-9

A thriller at Fraher Field in Dungarvan culminated in a wonderful Waterford victory.

Waterford were 2-5 to 1-5 in front at the break and it was equally hard fought in the second half.

Tom Devine scored a goal for Waterford, but that was cancelled out by a Jack English score for Limerick.

Approaching the interval, though, Conor Gleeson poked a crucial goal for Waterford.

It was tight from then on as a Kevin Daly goal put Waterford further clear before they dealt with a late Limerick rally that included a goal from Brian O’Connell.

Tipperary 1-10
Clare 0-8

A promising Tipperary side triumphed against Clare at Cusack Park in Ennis.

Even though Clare were bright and busy initially Tipp shaded a poor first half and were 1-3 to 0-4 ahead at half-time.

Alan Tynan’s goal was the crucial score because Tipp never allowed Clare a chance to stage a second period revival.

Kilkenny 3-20
Laois 1-9

Despite a spirited Laois performance, Kilkenny were just too strong at Nowlan Park and emerged convincing winners.

A first half John Walsh goal ensured Kilkenny led at the break by 1-9 to 0-7, but two goals early in the second period gave the locals a significant advantage.

Aidan Corby replied with a consolation goal for Laois, who were soundly beaten by an impressive Kilkenny outfit.

Offaly 5-23
Carlow 2-10

Colm Daly scored an opportunistic hat trick of goals as Offaly were emphatic winners over Carlow at Birr.

Carlow were rugged at the start, but Offaly went in only 2-8 to 2-7 in front at the break, before seizing control after the break.

Donal Mahon and James Kilmartin netted goals for Offaly too, while Conor Foley and Jason Shinners raised green flags for Carlow.

Kildare 8-10
Wicklow 1-11

Evan Dempsey was the star of the show for Kildare who hammered Wicklow at Aughrim.

Dempsey grabbed a hat-trick of goals, while Sean O’Hehir (2), Niall Kenny (2), and Brian Byrne also rattled the Wicklow net during the rout.
