Forward Thinking

Alex Ferguson anticipating new arrivals at Old Trafford this summer

“We’re competitive in the market — we’re not Chelsea or Manchester City in terms of money but we’re competitive,” Fergie says.

ALEX FERGUSON HAS revealed he expects Manchester United to be busy in the transfer window as he aims to add to their title-winning squad.

United secured their 20th English league crown this season, recapturing the Premier League title from rivals Manchester City in emphatic fashion.

Ferguson’s men sit an insurmountable 14 points clear of their neighbours and, although Ferguson is anticipating both City and Chelsea to spend big in the off-season, he is also hopeful of remaining active during the transfer window.

“We’re competitive in the market — we’re not Chelsea or Manchester City in terms of money but we’re competitive,” Ferguson wrote in his column for Inside United.

“We’ve been doing a bit of work over the last three or four months, targeting who the players are that we feel could enhance us, make us better or help us maintain the level we’re at. Hopefully the players we bring into the club in the next year or so will be of the quality we need.”

Ferguson acquired England U21 international Wilfried Zaha from Crystal Palace in January, and the Scot knows he will have to continue to bring younger players through if United are to remain successful in the future.

“You have to look at the structure of the club at present, in terms of the number of first-team players we have at 23 or under,” Ferguson added.

“Older players like Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Rio Ferdinand may be coming towards the end of their careers, but these younger players are the foundation for the next five or six years.”
