Alex Cuthbert plans to pay off student loan with Grand Slam bonus

Wales’ hero against France may also be in the market for a new motor.

ALEX CUTHBERT HAS revealed that he will pay off his student loan with the bonus he received from Wales’ Grand Slam triumph in this year’s Six Nations.

The 21-year-old went from being a Cardiff Blues rookie to scoring the try against France that secured a clean sweep for his country, and Cuthbert will now pocket in the region of £92,000 for starting every game in the run.

The WRU is expected to pay out roughly £2million in match fees and bonuses.

Cuthbert will net the maximum bonus, with players who did not start every game picking up reduced amounts.

“I’m going to whack any bonus straight into my savings. Buy a house or pay a deposit on one, perhaps. Just about pay off my student loan, hopefully!” he told Wales Online.

The wing revealed that he has been the butt of jokes from his Welsh team-mates over his choice of transport.

“I have had that for a few weeks – I’m driving a little Renault Clio around. But I don’t mind that, provided I am playing well on the pitch. A Grand Slam, it can’t get much better really.”

Cuthbert described the moment on Saturday when he drove through the French defence and grabbed the crucial score in a 16-9 victory.

“For my try, we got quick ball and I just saw the space and stepped in. Luckily, their full-back Clement Poitrenaud slipped and I just ran through to the line.

“It was an indescribable moment, one I will never forget. I didn’t know what to do. Maybe it will sink in over the next couple of weeks and I will think about what’s going on.”
