Airtricity League wrap: Byrne swoops to rescue the Seagulls

Danny North also led Sligo to another victory and there were wins for Shamrock Rovers, Cork and Monaghan.

JASON BYRNE STRUCK late in stoppage time to earn Bray Wanderers a point at home to St Patrick’s Athletic this evening.

In a game which the Seagulls had led twice, he legendary League of Ireland striker scored the first after 36 minutes before his dramatic equaliser.

Christy Fagan, Sean O’Connor and John Russell were on the scoresheet for Liam Buckley’s side while John Mulroy got the other one for Bray on the hour mark.

Also down as scoring a brace tonight was Danny North of Sligo Rovers. The Grimbsy-native was on target either side of half-time at the Showgrounds as the Bit O’Red continued their charge at the top.

Haitian international Pascal Millien came off the bench to grab his first goal for the club with a tremendous hit from distance on 84 minutes meaning Ian Baraclough’s side are now eight points clear of their nearest rivals Shamrock Rovers.

The Hoops bounced back from last weekend’s demoralising defeat to Sligo with a thoroughly–deserved 3-1 win over Drogheda United at Tallaght Stadium.

Gary McCabe was on hand to open the scoring with 15 minutes of the first half remaining. He received a pass from Gary O’Neill and drove a shot past Gabriel Sava in goal. Twigg then added two more (he is one behind top scorer North on 12 goals so far this season) and there was a consulation for the visitors thanks to Fabio O’Brien at the death.

A Davin O’Neill hat-trick helped Cork City record their third win on the bounce against UCD at Turner’s Cross.

Daryl Horgan had put Tommy Dunne’s side ahead initially but Graham Rusk levelled the terms for the Student. O’Neill then put three past Mark McGinley, once from the penalty spot, and Paul O’Conor added another for the away team.

Bohemians had President Michael D Higgins and James McClean in attendance at Dalymount Park but it was the Ireland winger’s former side who came away with the three points with goals from Stephen McLaughlin and Patrick McEleney.

Keith Ward was on target for the Gypsies.

Monaghan United got themselves a rare win at Oriel Park. The Mons won 2-1 despite conceding a Michael Rafter goal in the very first minute of play as Jordan Keegan’s double put them back in charge for what was only their second win of the campaign.

Down in the First Division, there were Limerick, Mervue United, Longford Town and Waterford United all came out on top.
