Airtricity League 2012: Five transfers which will make big impacts this season

We take a look at the names which you are likely to hear most about over the next eight months.

THE NEW SEASON is finally upon us after three months of players hopping on and off the usual League of Ireland merry-go-round.

Last year’s top two, Shamrock Rovers and Sligo, have strengthened again, Derry have lost some of their biggest names but will hope their new recruits can fill the void left while Cork City and St Pat’s look much stronger sides this time around. In the First Division, Limerick’s squad is by far the most talented and experienced.

We’ve singled out five players who we feel will be particularly influential for their respective sides in 2012:

  • Daryl Kavanagh (Shamrock Rovers)

Tipperary native Daryl Kavanagh joins last season's champions from St Pat's after a season which produced seven Premier Division goals and a PFAI Player of the Year nomination. The 25-year-old went on trial with Millwall during the close season but is sure to be one the Hoops' most exciting attacking options.
  • Colin Healy (Cork City)

The former Celtic, Sunderland and Ipswich Town midfielder, who has 13 senior caps for Ireland, returned to Turners Cross in January, having spent two seasons there between 2007-2009. At 31, Healy will act as a lynchpin at the centre of the park for Tommy Dunne's side.
  • Christy Fagan (St Patrick's Athletic)

Dubliner Fagan had a terrific debut season in the Airtricity League last year, scoring a goal every other game for Bohs, and has since moved across the Liffey to Inchicore. The 22-year-old former Manchester United youth will be looking to better the 11 league goals he scored last term for The Saints.
  • Mark Quigley (Sligo Rovers)

Quigley leaves Dundalk to move west and is hell-bent on winning the Premier Division having finished as a runner-up on three occasions. Along with fellow newcomer Danny North and Rafa Cretaro, the Bit O'Red possess an abundance of firepower going into the new campaign.
  • Stephen Bradley (Limerick FC)

A two-time Premier Division winner, Bradley steps down to the second tier with the aim of getting Pat Scully's Limerick promoted. They are overwhelming favourites for the title, which isn't a surprise with players like Bradley, Joe Gamble and Denis Behan in their ranks.

  • How were the bitta red supposed to win last night against a Shelbourne team that were only interested in hoofing the ball forward, route one, dying if a Rovers as much as looked at them and time wasting? because the elephant in the room was…the ref. There are people in mountjoy prison for doing less than the biased and downright connivanc, sparkling on collusion of this official (in my opinion) . If this is the way the once proud footballing team that Shels were are going to conduct themselves for the rest of the league, then the first division becons again

  • no they played one game versus sligo and returned,i have not heard why,as far as the local papers were concerned they had signed on loan for the season but, they hadnt signed obviously, its a pity ,they looked good, but i suppose it was too much to expect them to play first div in the LOI with their pedegree, but disapointing all the same, still we will win the title anyway and return to where we always should be!
