FORMER MAYO ATTACKER Aidan Kilcoyne dislocated his knee in a freak incident just moments before the start of yesterday’s Mayo SFC quarter-final tie in Castlebar.
Kilcoyne, who was involved with the Mayo senior squad for several years, suffered the injury just after the team photo had been taken before his club Knockmore’s clash with Ballintubber at Elvery’s MacHale Park.
It is understood that Kilcoyne sprung up off the bench and in the process dislocated his knee in a freak incident.
The bizarre injury saw him severely injure his knee and the throw-in to the game was delayed as Kilcoyne received medical attention.
Knockmore subsequently went on to win the game without their star forward by 1-15 to 1-10 against a Ballintubber team who were without their own marquee forward Cillian O’Connor on this occasion due to his shoulder injury.
Kilcoyne is set to undergo an MRI scan to properly assess the damage but will miss next Sunday’s county semi-final against Castlebar Mitchels.
The injury comes at an inopportune time for Kilcoyne as it is understood that he had recently returned to Ireland to work in Dublin after previously being based in London.
Kilcoyne, who struck 1-6 when May won the 2006 All-Ireland U21 final, has been in impressive club form for Knockmore this season.
That lead to speculation that the player could force his way into the inter-county reckoning for the 2014 season after returning to Ireland but his prospects have been dealt a blow after suffering such a serious injury.
Aw the poor guy. This is what players work towards all year. To be dealt this blow as the finishing line is in sight must be devastating for him. Speedy recovery to you Aidan Kilcoyne.
Thought it was mcmannaman from Dublin when I took a quick glance
Wtf!!I will be careful the next time i sit down!Hope he recovers quickly though.
Hope he recovers soon. Was playing really well and looked a certainty for mayo senior panel in 2014, having just moved back from the UK. Still one of the top forwards within the county
