6 Nations: ‘Miserable’ Kearney calls for fighting spirit against France

“We’ve got to be honest with ourselves”, said the mis-firing fullbackas he searched for positives from the defeat to Scotland.

IRELAND FULLBACK ROB Kearney says the Irish dressing room was in a ‘miserable’ mood after giving up an eight-point lead in today’s Six Nations clash with Scotland.

A Paddy Jackson penalty and Craig Gilroy try had given Ireland a paltry reward for dominance in possession, but from the 52nd minute, four Greig Laidlaw penalties set the hosts on course to record their first back-to-back wins in the competition since 2001.

“We probably lacked a little of that clinical edge.” Kearney told RTE post-match.

“We got penalties, we didn’t take them and we gave away too many penalties in the second half and just lost that bit of the territory battle.

“I think the signs are pretty clear why we didn’t win on the day.”

On a day when no Irish player would claim to have played well, Kearney reached for the positives of a game where chances were created in the first half and possession dominated throughout.

Trying

However, in moments such as this, the positivity tends to feel extremely hollow.

“The opportunities were there, we were trying to play rugby, we got a lot of possession, we put ourselves in good positions. And, okay, unfortunately the result wasn’t there for us but we have to take a little solace in the fact that we were creating things.”

Pushed further, and with the reality of losing two games out of three Triple Crown clashes and with only 21 points scored in the last 200 minutes of rugby, Kearney did add that he was left feeling miserable, particularly as they now must wait another fortnight before having an outlet to vent their frustration.

“It’s pretty miserable, I won’t lie about it. It’s not a nice feeling and everyone’s very disappointed.

“We can’t hide from it, we’ve got to be honest with ourselves. It’s unfortunate we’ve got another week now before… we have a week’s rest, but we’d love to get them back on the field next week, but we have to come out really fighting against France and make a big statement.

“We still have the basis of a really good team. We really believe that and we will continue to believe that and we’ll continue to play rugby. We just have to hope that, on the day, we can get that clinical edge. The parts of the game we were poor at today, we need to be better at.”

  • Where to start……

    1) Dk to leave after the 6n. Ideally O Shea to replace if possible. Hold onto Kiss and Foley (our defense has been top notch). I’d actually suggest EOS as backs coach. Not a head coach but his sides have always had inventive back play and high levels of technical ability.

    2) Elite scrum coach…why hasn’t this post been filled yet? Sort it IRFU. Now. You have 2 years.

    3) Gradual blooding of young players for last 2 games and autumn internationals. We need to see if the likes of Marshall(x2), Cave, Jackson, TOD, Madigan etc are capable of making the grade. Who cares if we lose?

4)Harsher stance taken with provinces. Jackson needs to b kicking if he has any chance at 10 for Ireland. Madigan should b playing at 10 for Leinster not 15.

    5) Better movement of players between provinces. Not sure how to do this, maybe offer certain players larger contracts to go to a certain province? We cannot keep young talent behind established internationals for as long as we do now. Its killing us.

    6) Create a 5th province after 2015. If Connacht maintain their growth curve then a 5th province based in the UK will allow us to look at more options than we are currently capable of doing. Maybe offer London Irish an incentive to sign Irish players. Pay 60% of an IQd players salary or similar.

    7) Take 7s seriously, its a wonderful skills school for players to transfer to 15s. I know funding is an issue but it should b seriously looked at.

    That’ll do for now.

  • Great comments Cian , agree with it all except a fifth Provence as Connacht are getting a raw deal from the IRFU as it is now and would be even worse if there was another team.

  • Finally to go into any international match without a first rated kicker is suicidal, just take away all the points scored by kicking in any of the tests played in the 6nations and you would get quite a different table of results.

  • Having played all of my first team rugby in England I never understood why sevens rugby never took off in Ireland. Almost every club in the UK was involved in sevens of some sort or other and it was a great introduction to the season. Belvedere ran a competition for some years but it never really took in Ireland to any great extent.

  • Agree with just about everything but the 5th province, given our comparatively small pool of players another Team would be one to many. This pool has not changed over many years and has to compete with GAA and Soccer.
