Ireland looking to land 'Killer' blow on Scots to salvage 6 Nations bid

Munster prop Dave Kilcoyne is expected to start at tighthead prop in Murrayfield with Tom Court as back-up.

THE BAN MAY be three weeks or four but there is no arguing the fact that Cian Healy will miss next weekendโ€™s Six Nations clash with Scotland.

Given the combative nature of the Six Nations โ€“ five games in seven weeks โ€“ there is a chance that Dave Kilcoyne could have made his first start against the Scots but, for his piece of mind at least, the wait and wonder is over.

Barring a Tom Court hat-trick, with nine penalties won on the scrum, against Zebre, the Kilcoyne will start in the No. 1 jersey.

The Munster loosehead will get the chance to show Irish supporters what comes so naturally at Thomond Park, and to a lesser degree away from home, next Sunday.

Perhaps Rob Penneyโ€™s bonus point-infused claims that Kilcoyne could make the Lions squad will be refiled from โ€˜Lโ€™ [ludicrously ambitious] to โ€˜Pโ€™ [perfectly plausible].

Axel backs Killer

With Mike McCarthy ruled out of the Scotland encounter and Donncha Oโ€™Callaghan expected to fill in, the Irish front five may be closer to Ireland circa forever โ€“ something that must please Anthony Foley.

Following cameo coaching stints Axel has a hands-on role as Ireland defence coach for this campaign. The former Ireland front-row likes what he sees in Kilcoyne.

He told TheScore.ie, โ€œLike all young players, he brings a lot of vigour and enthusiasm to what he does.

He has come on leaps and bounds scrummaging, weโ€™ve all see that. Heโ€™s a very aggressive ball carrier and defender around the pitch.โ€

Mike Ross, who is likely to pack down in the front row with Kilcoyne, watched the Scotland victory over Italy with great interest and believes Irelandโ€™s front three will have a tough slog in Edinburgh.

He said, โ€œI saw that they took them back for a little walk in front of their own posts. You donโ€™t see that happen too often.โ€

Ross will be hoping that his young pack-mate will be able to show all the brutish abilities that have earned him the nickname โ€˜Killerโ€™.

No bother to him. Thankfully Healyโ€™s loss will not be felt as hard as it may have been in previous years.

Totally agree, I am Healyโ€™s biggest fan but killer looks the real deal too.
Pity heโ€™s not a tight-head, imagine the two of them on the same pitch

Great news, itโ€™s well merited after his performances. Donโ€™t get me wrong, I am a massive Healy fan. He is a brute of a ball carrier and wrecking ball in the contact area, but this can only be good for Irish rugby, Kilcoyne looks like a mean piece of work, canโ€™t wait to see how he fares.

Good that we have a bit of depth in the squad, I think Kilcoyne, donnacha and earls coming in for their respective
injured teammates doesnโ€™t weaken the side much, if any.

Certainly not to the extent a BOD or mike Ross injury would. Only question for me is over ROG. whilst still a great experienced sub to have, and a legend in his own right, can he still produce the goods at this level?

I kind of thought he would do well in conditions against England, but looked lethargic in general play and even his trademark kicking out of hand to the corners wasnโ€™t great. What yis think? Will be beat Scotland?

Rog was put under massive pressure by Robshaw in a man-of-the-match performance that saw him in Rogโ€™s face all day.
As a result Rog was forced to stand a couple of yards deeper and even then he didnโ€™t really have time and space to make his kicks.
Any fly half would have struggled under that kind of pressure, and Sexton was also having a pretty torrid time before he went off.
Rog had a poor enough match overall but I certainly wouldnโ€™t write him off just yetโ€ฆ
