THE BAN MAY be three weeks or four but there is no arguing the fact that Cian Healy will miss next weekendโs Six Nations clash with Scotland.
Given the combative nature of the Six Nations โ five games in seven weeks โ there is a chance that Dave Kilcoyne could have made his first start against the Scots but, for his piece of mind at least, the wait and wonder is over.
Barring a Tom Court hat-trick, with nine penalties won on the scrum, against Zebre, the Kilcoyne will start in the No. 1 jersey.
The Munster loosehead will get the chance to show Irish supporters what comes so naturally at Thomond Park, and to a lesser degree away from home, next Sunday.
Perhaps Rob Penneyโs bonus point-infused claims that Kilcoyne could make the Lions squad will be refiled from โLโ [ludicrously ambitious] to โPโ [perfectly plausible].
Axel backs Killer
With Mike McCarthy ruled out of the Scotland encounter and Donncha OโCallaghan expected to fill in, the Irish front five may be closer to Ireland circa forever โ something that must please Anthony Foley.
Following cameo coaching stints Axel has a hands-on role as Ireland defence coach for this campaign. The former Ireland front-row likes what he sees in Kilcoyne.
He told TheScore.ie, โLike all young players, he brings a lot of vigour and enthusiasm to what he does.
He has come on leaps and bounds scrummaging, weโve all see that. Heโs a very aggressive ball carrier and defender around the pitch.โ
Mike Ross, who is likely to pack down in the front row with Kilcoyne, watched the Scotland victory over Italy with great interest and believes Irelandโs front three will have a tough slog in Edinburgh.
He said, โI saw that they took them back for a little walk in front of their own posts. You donโt see that happen too often.โ
Ross will be hoping that his young pack-mate will be able to show all the brutish abilities that have earned him the nickname โKillerโ.
No bother to him. Thankfully Healyโs loss will not be felt as hard as it may have been in previous years.
Totally agree, I am Healyโs biggest fan but killer looks the real deal too.
Pity heโs not a tight-head, imagine the two of them on the same pitch
Great news, itโs well merited after his performances. Donโt get me wrong, I am a massive Healy fan. He is a brute of a ball carrier and wrecking ball in the contact area, but this can only be good for Irish rugby, Kilcoyne looks like a mean piece of work, canโt wait to see how he fares.
Good that we have a bit of depth in the squad, I think Kilcoyne, donnacha and earls coming in for their respective
injured teammates doesnโt weaken the side much, if any.
Certainly not to the extent a BOD or mike Ross injury would. Only question for me is over ROG. whilst still a great experienced sub to have, and a legend in his own right, can he still produce the goods at this level?
I kind of thought he would do well in conditions against England, but looked lethargic in general play and even his trademark kicking out of hand to the corners wasnโt great. What yis think? Will be beat Scotland?
Rog was put under massive pressure by Robshaw in a man-of-the-match performance that saw him in Rogโs face all day.
As a result Rog was forced to stand a couple of yards deeper and even then he didnโt really have time and space to make his kicks.
Any fly half would have struggled under that kind of pressure, and Sexton was also having a pretty torrid time before he went off.
Rog had a poor enough match overall but I certainly wouldnโt write him off just yetโฆ
Salvage? Tis over.
