5 of our favourite fitness apps for May

Bodybuilding, running and a caffeine tracker all feature this month.

1. The Johnson & Johnson Official 7 Minute Workout App

THIS APP HAS 13 pre-designed workouts, 36 exercises  and the ability to design your own seven-minute workout.  You can choose the length of your intervals, the number of times you want to complete a particular circuit and you can import your own music to help with the workout.

Cost: Free

Available from: iTunes, Google Play

2. Map My Fitness

If you use a smartphone, the chances are you’ve used the GPS on numerous occasions. This handy app allows you to choose from more than 600 exercises and, using the GPS, can design a pre-planned interactive route or let the app choose one for you. While it’s great that this app syncs with Twitter and Facebook, don’t annoy your friends with constant updates.

Cost: Free but with in-app purchases.

Available from: iTunes, Google Play

3. Breeze

This is one for those of you thinking about getting back into shape rather than those who visit the gym four times a week. By storing your previous seven days activity, Breeze gives you specific goals every day and even provides you with encouraging messages to help you reach your daily target.

Cost: Free

Available from: iTunes

4. JEFIT Pro

There is a free version of this app – designed by bodybuilders for bodybuilders – but the advertisements becomes so annoying it’s difficult to use. With this one you can workout virtually every part of your body with the help of animated photos of the correct way to perform the exercise.

Cost: €3.74

Available from: Google Play, iTunes

5. UP Coffee

Whether tea, coffee or even energy drinks are your poison of choice, most of us don’t realise the impact caffeine has on our sleep/wake cycles. This app guides you through the optimal time to consume caffeine and how much sleep you can expect at night given your caffeine intake during the day.

Cost: Free

Available from: iTunes

MyFitnessPal is also a great app. Its a food journal that shows you the calories of everything and calculates how many you should have a day depending on how much weight you wish to loose

Pretty obvious one, but I still think Runkeeper deserves mentioning cause of it’s handy layout and mapping. It also incorporates excerise plans for beginner to expert now too

The 7 minute workout is great for days when it’s too wet to go for a run, or when my little one is home from school and I can’t get to the gym. I do it 5/6 times straight through, it’s awesome.

I think Endomondo is really great. Tracks everything in 1 app. I don’t get all the different versions of MapMyFitness. Why so many different ones which all do the same thing?

“Fitstar by Tony Gonzalez” is a fantastic workout app. It’s free to use, but also has a pro version at €4.50 a month with more exercises.

There are different flavours of “Map My Fitness”. I’m using “Map My Ride” to track my cycling and it does the job (although I ended up paying the yearly membership fees to avoid ads and unlock a few features)
If you’re starting up try a few apps and see which interface works for you.

Turn off data and everything else. Still heavy on battery but not as bad. Think Strava uses less battery and slightly better than map my ride
