ESPNโS ACCLAIMED SERIES of sports documentaries, 30 for 30 will unveil a new series this April.
In preparation to this summerโs World Cup, the American network has commissioned its films to centre around a football theme.
The series will include a 30-minute film focusing on the 1994 Loughinisland massacre which took place during the Republic of Irelandโs 1 โ 0 World Cup group win over Italy in New York.
โCeasefire Massacre,โ says the preview from ESPN, โwill reveal how the juxtaposition of the jubilation felt inside Giants Stadium against the horrors of what happened in the Heights Bar, encapsulated the mood of the time.
โAfter 25-years of conflict, Ireland and her people longed for peace and prosperity but the brutalities of the violence in the North were never far from the surface.โ
In addition to Ceasefire Massacre, there will be five more 30 minute films and two feature length documentaries; Hillborough and White, Blue and White (charting the career of Ossie Adiles in England).
You can view the full list and details of films due to be released under the 30 for 30 banner this spring here.
Looking forward to these.
I was in the stand behind the goal in which ray scored that wonder goal. The giants stadium was a sea of green that day. Fantastic trip
Was on a plane from New York to Florida, still high from victory over Italy, when a fellow passenger approached and showed us a paper reporting the massacre back home, the sheer contrast in emotions was difficult to handle.
Loughlinisland? The FAI and the 1994 squad should hang their heads in shame. They were publicly all upset about the Colombian player who was murdered and not a geek out of them at the time about their own supporters being massacred watching the NY match on TV. Despicable. 19 years later they wear black armbands in memory. Too ****ing late IMO!!!
The players who wore black armbands 19 years later couldnโt wear black armbands in 1994 cos they werenโt on he team. What exactly did you expect 13year old Robbie Keane to do?
I donโt expect anything from the current / last yearโs team. Iโm not an idiot. The team at the time and the FAI should have made some gesture, but didnโt. Shame on all concerned.
@richard
The players were at the World Cup, competing in competition. Any stories from the media is a distraction that detracts from performance.
Itโs a complete No No for professional athletes.
We can appreciate the FAI acknowledging the massacre June 1994,and sending condolences on behalf of the team.
Iโm not suggesting, they should have issued a statement, while the world cup was on. But when the thing was over and they came back with a big reception in the Phoenix Park, there was a collection for the family of the murdered Colombian player โ a noble gesture, no question โ but nowt regarding the massacre of their own fans. Putting on black armbands 19 years later is, without an apology for the delay, in my opinion, merely adding insult to injury.
Good night, all.
I realise the subject matter of the film is indeed political. But Iโd greatly appreciate if you could keep the comment section free of that and let me keep comments open through the night.
8 red thumbs you stay classy score fans!
I with you on that :)
Just had a read of the list of shows coming up. Some very interesting documentaries in there.
Youโre going a bit off topic there, but I take your pointโฆ I donโt doubt unionist fears did and still do exist, youโre a very insecure people, even to this day.
Why have the rest of these comments been deleted?
Wee, Iโm going to give it to you straight. There was no other comments, you have been talking to yourself and unfortunately you are insane.
Onionists & realpublicans
The day Ireland played Mexico a army helicopter containing members of black watch crash landed just by my house, I later met one of them while working in an out door pursuits centre in France 10 years later.
Looking forward to this. โฆthese documentarys from ESPN are quality, watched a very good one on Andres Escobar, well worth a watch
