Irish-born Robert Jon-McCarthy wins opening stage of this year's Rás

The 20-year old led home a one-two for his An Post team.

IRISH-BORN ROBERT Jon-McCarthy took the opening stage of the 2014 An Post Rás between Dunboyne and Roscommon after a sprint finish today.

The rider emigrated to Australia with his family when he was 14 and is an U23 international with his adopted country.

His team mate, Shane Archbold took second place today, a result that will please the team whose primary sponsor put their name to the race.

Daniel Klemme was the third man home in the bunch finish after the peloton reeled in a 10-man breakaway containing five Irish riders - Sean Downey (An Post-Chainreaction), Peter Hawkins (Madison Genesis), Bryan McCrystal (Aquablue), Eoin Morton (UCD CC) and Fraser Duncan (DID Dunboyne) – just a few kilometres from the finish line.

Tomorrow’s stage sees the riders travel the 159KM between Roscommon and Lisdoonvarna.
