When asked to name Vieira’s biggest weakness, Keane said that he felt he was tougher than the Frenchman. Vieira, when asked the same question, said that Keane’s tendency to “lose his head” was his biggest flaw.
2. Keane hated Arsenal more than any other team
Keane revealed that the Gunners “brought something out in me”. He also recalled how both managers were happy for such a fiery atmosphere to exist between the sides, and claimed that Ferguson seldom encouraged him to be calm ahead of the game.
3. The greatest moment of Keane’s United career was “signing for them”
The Corkonian described joining the club as “a dream come true,” suggesting it didn’t get any better than that moment despite all he achieved there.
4. Giggs, Scholes and Neville may feel hard done by watching it
None of the three players made Keane’s all-time United XI of players he played with, though he did say that if he was to swap anyone, it would be himself for Scholes. Meanwhile, on Giggs, he quipped: “Having a great career doesn’t mean you’re a great player”.
When it was pointed out that many of the players on his team fell out with Ferguson, he said: “You don’t win the league title with choirboys… Maybe that’s why we were winning titles.”
Keane’s all-time XI: Peter Schmeichel; Paul Parker, Gary Pallister, Jaap Stam, Denis Irwin, David Beckham, Paul Ince, Roy Keane, Cristiano Ronaldo, Eric Cantona, Ruud Van Nistelrooy.

5. He initially didn’t think he deserved his Champions League medal
Keane revealed he at first felt he didn’t deserve his Champions League medal after missing the final through suspension. But he added that his views had “softened” on the matter in recent years though.
6. He was “offended” by Ferguson’s praise of him
After being quoted back Ferguson’s first autobiography in which the manager said he “covered every blade of grass” in the Champions League semi-final, Keane said he felt “offended” by the description. “It’s like praising the postman for delivering letters. What did he expect me to do? Give up?”
7. Keane does have some good words to say about Ferguson
The former United captain said that the manager “had a good feel for what the group needed… He generally got that right.”
8. If he could change one thing about his career, it would be to “play in the [2002] World Cup”
(INPHO/Andrew Paton)
When McCarthy asked him how he can play for a manager he doesn’t respect, he said he should’ve responded: “I wasn’t playing for him, I was playing for my country.” He explained that, in Saipan, he “wasn’t looking for perfection,” he was “looking for progress” and for the Irish team to “train like Germany or Italy”.
9. Keane was driven by “fear”
Keane was obsessed with “fear of losing, fear of letting people down, fear of letting my neighbours down, fear of letting my family down”. He said that enjoyment after games was “very brief, too brief” until the fear “creeps back”.
10. He didn’t go out to “injure” Alf Inge Haaland
Keane admitted he went out to “hurt” players because that was “my job”. However, he claims he never sought to intentionally “injure” Haaland or anyone else.
11. Vieira started their infamous Highbury row
Keane revealed he was incensed when he saw Arsenal players picking on Gary Neville because he was the “weakest link”. Vieira also described how the argument started after Neville taunted Robert Pires and the Arsenal midfielder intervened to defend his teammate.
12. Keane was “tempted” to play abroad
Keane said he held talks with clubs such as Bayern Munich and Juventus as his contract was running out, but never felt “strongly enough” to make the move “because I was happy at United.” He added that he partially does “regret” not availing of the opportunity.
13. His warmth for Man United has returned
Keane says he lost his warm feelings for the club for a few years after leaving them, but has since regained his love for United — to the point where himself and his son are now season-ticket holders there.
I was only a young lad when Ince was with United (still got his name on the back of my jersey because it was the cheapest) so I wouldn’t know but Keane played along side both. Maybe Ince played well against Keane on a few occasions (Liverpool in 1999 springs to mind) and that made his decision between the two.
Football is missing the bite that these two and others like them brought to the game. Great show, Roy always entertains. And maybe some day his relationship with Fergie will mellow too.
I hope so Rob. As a die hard utd fan. I hated arsenal too. But as a football fan, I’ve come to realise Vieira was a smashing player. Fantastic engine. Great player
After watching Roy Keane tonight and getting more of an insight into his desire to prepare and win,I can honestly say that with the right management,Martin O’Neill and Roy Keane may just be the best thing to ever happen to the Republic Of Ireland…
As Keano said himself during the program, it’s all about progress. Definitely a step in the right direction. I think his revelation about not playing in 2002 as his biggest footballing regret shows his desire to take the national team forward. Btw Great documentary.
Football today is nowhere as good as it was when these lads were playing! I’d love to see how Roy would handle playing with the likes of Ashley Young or Nani in his team!!!!
Amazing to see the most vicious rivals sit down and explain why it all happened. Keane is the master of midfield, vieira a master himself, great program! Keane has no time for fergie anyway! Haha
To see that look , passion and intensity, hope he can bring some of that to us as a national team. Great show both players honest and true. No diving on the floor by these warriors
Great programme. Think Keane can be tongue in cheek and play up to tough guy image when he wants. More savvy at working with and in the media now I think than most give him credit for. But what a player. Will to win second to nobody
I kinda feel for Roy ,,2 miss out playing in any world cup must haunt him big time ,As for a footy player none better ,,loved te way he gave 100% every time he played for club #country ,Hope he does well with our team ,from a liverpool fan that likes class sportman like Roy
A Utd fan with years and always hated arsenal but always had the utmost respect for Vieira, a fantastic player for his club, pity there’s not `another` Keane and Vieira around now, would make the game more exciting.
Yeah jack charlton a better manager. 1976 (I think) second division champions with forest, then first div champs 1978, euro champs 79 & 80. Plus he won a first div title in 74 or 75 with derby. With very middle of the road teams. No other manager managed it back then. Charlton got lucky that he took over Ireland when Whelan, McGrath, Staunton, Quinn etc were coming into their prime. Long ball bully tactics was all he had!
I would prefer to be Vierra as a person. Keane is a small angry Irish man who still has issues with everything. Vierra was so much more relaxed and comfortable it was refreshing to see. I see a lot of Keane clones within Irish society — angry bitter small men. Grow up Roy — your kids are looking at your childish behaviour. Imagine going out to finish a career of a fellow worker or damaging a man so badly it ruins his life? Your children hopefully will not repeat your disgusting example as the grow up. You don’t represent me as an Irish person.
He represented me. He always wanted ireland to do better. Thats something that is lost in the Roy Keane saga. He makes me proud of that he was an Irish player.
He didn’t go out to injure him. Did u watch the documentary. He went out to hurt as they did to him. Calling him an irish pikey. Angry men…..pot and kettle.
He was right when complaining about Ireland being ok to lose, we have great fans crap…. I want Ireland challenging, not just showing up with great fans..
Get you’re facts right before shooting you’re gob off.haaland went on to play for Norway the following week and it was actually his other knee that finished his career
I love a player that gets stuck in. When he says he went out to hurt players I respect that and understand what he is saying. The tackle on Alfie Haland was a chicken shit tackle .
Wow it’s all coming back now he was the man all right would count down the weeks till the next Arsenal, and even
Chelsea or Newcastle match great times for football entertainment pubs used to fill up even hotels pints grub good times.
I’d love to see him up against World Cup winners Spain they would probably adapt to long ball tactics to keep him far away from the ball as possible.
When the sky sports camera used to pan around the pitch Keane was always on the edge of the screen pacing chasing till the the slightest error was made then bam Keane was all over em, centre stage in possession feeding the players with his game face on you can’t mess up with him or against him coz he’s 200% all of the time.
I have to say I love em to bits !
Was hard to watch him loose his pace in the end of his MUtd days but all good things come to an end hope he can dig deep and make a difference for Ireland best of luck to him and the BIG.
“I went out to hurt people not injure them” is there a difference ?? Surely one leads to the other !! I don’t think he suffers fools gladly but his ego is big and he thrives on the hard man label.
How he could leave scholes out is a joke n have ince instead ince n keane r t same type of player keane n scholes in t middle without doubt t best balance n he knows that just a bitter against utd
Yea big time he would of put John o Shea in tat team if he was on bad terms with fergie for fuk sake fair enough give fergie abit of stick but wat has scholes ever done on him to leave him out for ince no brainer no wonder he’s a bad manager with tat selection mate
Superb documentary. Great wit, banter, and one-liners by Keane. Scholes ommission is a surprise alright. Though he did say he’d ommit himself for Paul. Great to see himself and Vieira so relaxed and honest with each other. Terrific viewing.
Man that was compelling stuff. Keane is still wound tight as a coiled spring. Vieira so chilled in comparison. Keane was a one off and such a class player and leader but still can’t believe people say everything he does was right. Don’t think its possible for a human. I mean if joey Barton did what he did to haaland ye would be going… Ah I’m wasting my breath
No Scholes? Ah now come on Roy… The same could be said of Rooney given his inclusion of Ronaldo. Hard to argue with the backline & goalkeeper but the rest (bar himself & Cantona) is fair game.
Great show in fairness, made me wish for the good old days when football was a man’s game, and players while were still on massive salaries, they didn’t earn £250,000 a week!! Now it’s a game dominated by money, little or no club loyalty, and nearly impossible for home produced players to make their mark.

My estimation of both players as people went straight up after that show. Brilliant documentary.
In his best XI, Ince out Scholes in ??
I was only a young lad when Ince was with United (still got his name on the back of my jersey because it was the cheapest) so I wouldn’t know but Keane played along side both. Maybe Ince played well against Keane on a few occasions (Liverpool in 1999 springs to mind) and that made his decision between the two.
Quality program! Some great quotes from Keano.
Like him or loathe him but he’s as honest as the day is long. A warrior on the pitch… they just don’t make ‘em like Captain Keane anymore!
To think I nearly missed it, best football program I’ve watched in a while!!
I missed it brendan. Ill have to dig it up from somewhere
It’s on RTE2 next week.
Great watch!! Changed my opinion of Vieira!!
Is it conor seriously?
Dec 18th at 9.55pm.
Good Man Conor :)
The whole show is available on YouTube ! The score also have links up on there site ..
Awesome show , Keane hasn’t mellowed an ounce best of luck with that Mr Delaney !!
Forget Anchorman2, the sequel we all want to see is Keane v Fergie in Best of Enemies 2
Football today is nowhere as good as it was when these lads were playing! I’d love to see how Roy would handle playing with the likes of Ashley Young or Nani in his team!!!!
Um mm I think they wud be on the death notices.
He’d probably physically kill them
I hear yah ;-) I used to love football when these 2 played, it simply doesn’t hold the same quality now
A pity there is no players in Premiership like them two anymore…Great battles.
two great footballers.
Hear hear
Amazing to see the most vicious rivals sit down and explain why it all happened. Keane is the master of midfield, vieira a master himself, great program! Keane has no time for fergie anyway! Haha

Great programme. Think Keane can be tongue in cheek and play up to tough guy image when he wants. More savvy at working with and in the media now I think than most give him credit for. But what a player. Will to win second to nobody
Had no idea keano was so quick witted! “Bergkamp can’t even fly”!! Great documentary.
I kinda feel for Roy ,,2 miss out playing in any world cup must haunt him big time ,As for a footy player none better ,,loved te way he gave 100% every time he played for club #country ,Hope he does well with our team ,from a liverpool fan that likes class sportman like Roy
1994. He got the award for best Irish player.
Obviously we didn’t learn anything about Viera then?!
Was thinking the same thing!
Really enjoyed it. Its really ashame the way fergie kicked him out. Ferguson came out of all this v badly.
They both said it that the bite is gone from the game. Too sanitised now on tackles and hard hits. It’s the PL loss that it’s gone from the game.
“Roy, what was Vieras biggest weakness??”.. “He wasnt as tough as me” says Roy.
Class.
Great documentary. Both have definately mellowed.
God bless Roy
Great show. I thought keane was very relaxed & honest & Vierias compliment at the end showed how much respect he had for Roy.
Ah jaysis now you’re mskin it hard that I missed it. Dont have itv4
Middle 90′s to early 00′s best years of soccer. Hopefully we’ll get to see games/rivalry like that again.
The postman delivers his post, that’s his job
Keane will always be a legend, pure honesty his desire hunger & 100% attitude in every game second to none!
Great player & born leader!
A Utd fan with years and always hated arsenal but always had the utmost respect for Vieira, a fantastic player for his club, pity there’s not `another` Keane and Vieira around now, would make the game more exciting.
Great programme .
Thoroughly enjoyed it, a fantastic documentary.
Shocking that he taught clough was his best manager, I mean come on jack charlton clearly better
Jack was an lucky manager at beat…. He certainly was no tactical genius.
Yeah jack charlton a better manager. 1976 (I think) second division champions with forest, then first div champs 1978, euro champs 79 & 80. Plus he won a first div title in 74 or 75 with derby. Keane is very entertaining to watch. I like that he doesnt hold back. Great program but shocked that it only made ITV4 and not the main ITV station
13 things we learned about Roy Keane
“I went out to hurt people not injure them” is there a difference ?? Surely one leads to the other !! I don’t think he suffers fools gladly but his ego is big and he thrives on the hard man label.
Well he hurt overmars at the start of the dutch game and that was the last we saw of him in that game. But Overmars wasnt injured
Two men and only one of them is bitter
Really? I didn’t think Vieira seemed that bitter tbh.
Obviously been a Leeds fan as left u bitter. Loved how he didn’t regret Alfie half legs tackle. As he said a mouth piece. We’d have all done the same.
Alfie deserved every ounce of pain keano inflicted upon his mouthy body!! Viva Keano!
Your an idiot.
*You’re
Dumbass!!
KEEEEANO-OO
How he could leave scholes out is a joke n have ince instead ince n keane r t same type of player keane n scholes in t middle without doubt t best balance n he knows that just a bitter against utd
Something wrong there alright. Is he being controversial? He bloody hated ince

No. 12. Where exactly is Manchester in relation to Cork?
Not abroad anyway. The term abroad is widely used to refer to mainland Europe. Did they not teach you that in school?
Hey
What a great Documentary. Keane is a legend. Ok I agree picking Irwin over Cole was not right but he suggested Scholes over himself in the team.
Anyone have a link so I can watch it from oz
Eanna.. It would be worth the trip from Oz to Ireland to watch it.. If i can link it i will tho
Eanna u can get it on the player. If u checkout using a proxy to BBC then u can by pass the country check.
BBC? It was on ITV 4?
It was on itv4
No Scholes? Ah now come on Roy… The same could be said of Rooney given his inclusion of Ronaldo. Hard to argue with the backline & goalkeeper but the rest (bar himself & Cantona) is fair game.
Little wrong with that side. But agree scholesy should be in it
South Park was on the same time, I couldn’t watch that arse licking tripe!
Watching two of the best midfielders to play in English football is tripe. Your bitterness knows no bounds.
Great show in fairness, made me wish for the good old days when football was a man’s game, and players while were still on massive salaries, they didn’t earn £250,000 a week!! To watch it on ITV player from Ireland, download the Hola unblocker extension for Chrome, that’s what I did.
