1 win, 1 defeat as Ireland's boxers get underway at European Championships

Adam Nolan is through to the last 16 of the welterweight division after a win against Polish opposition this evening.

ADAM NOLAN GOT his European championship challenge off to a winning start but there was disappointment for Sean McComb in Minsk.

Nolan scored a unanimous victory against Poland’s Tomasz Kot, winning all three rounds on the judges’ cards to book his place in the last 16 of the welterweight division.

The Bray Garda, who flew the flag at last year’s London Olympics, will now meet Bogdan Shelestyuk of the Ukraine after a 30-27, 29-28, 29-28 win.

But there was disappointment for Belfast’s McComb who had hoped to get the Irish team off to a winning start when he met Ukraine’s Pavlo Ischenko in the lightweight division.

“Sean kept trying right up to the last bell,” team coach Billy Walsh said after a 29-27, 29-28, 29-29 defeat. “Kept throwing punches to try and turn it around. He gave it everything and that’s all we can ask for.”

Four more Irish boxers take to the ring tomorrow with former European champions Joe Ward and Ray Moylette, Olympic bronze medallist Michael Conlan and super-heavyweight contender Con Sheehan all in action.
